1. Minutes for 6-11-19 were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.
a. Old Business
i. July 4th picnic was a huge success!! A hive was donated to the club by Elmore Hermon
and Millie Bees. We didn’t have raffle tickets on hand and a discussion was had about
whether to bring the hive for a raffle at the next meeting. Elmore mentioned giving the
hive to the Porter’s who hosted our picnic. The interim president and secretary were the
only 2 presents and felt that was a great idea because the Porter’s had volunteered time
at every event we have had this year from Earth Day, Field Day, and hosting the 4 th of
July picnic on their property.
ii. Union County Beekeeper Donation that was turned over to NBHCA Busy Bee Club—A
card was brought by Shalome, and signed by the members that attended the meeting.

b. New Business
i. Swarm in Callaway
ii. Return to IFAS for meetings—the IFAS building we use to meet at is up and running.
Shalome will check to see if we can start having meetings there again.
iii. Hive Maintenance was discussed—Feed bees if necessary we are in dearth and
nectar may be hard to find. Treat for Mites. Ensure proper ventilation of hives and
ensure they have a water source.
iv. What’s blooming—mangrove, cotton, goldenrod, Mexican clover, primrose
willow. We also discussed that blooms may still be off a bit due to the hurricane.
v. A question and answer session was held where new members asked questions about
their hives. We discussed splitting hives and boosting weak hives.

c. Speakers
i. Fern Compton gave a fabulous discussion on Zombee’s which are bees that are
parasitized. This means they are compromised by Phorid Flies, which land on the bees,
lay eggs in the bees, and as the larvae hatch, they eat the bee from the inside out. The
bee goes crazy and will fly around a light until it dies. There is no prophylactic treatment
for this. Fern gave information on states where these have been witnessed and even
mentioned there was someone here locally monitoring to see if we had any cases.
d. Upcoming Events—Eastern Apiculture Society is having a conference on July 15-19, 2019 in
Montreal, Canada. And the American Beekeeping Association is having a conference and expo in
January 8-11, 2020 in Schaumburg, Illinois.
