University of Florida Entomology & Nematology Dept. Dr Jack did his PhD with Jamie Ellis. Email is cjack@ufl.edu He is willing to answer questions via email. Journal of Insect Science: Integrated Pest Management (varroa) written by Cameron Jack and James Ellis (look it up online) Dr Jack gave an outline of the history of varroa in the United States. Varroa vector viruses.
5 tier controls:
Prevention: Of critical importance near sea and airports. Bus has left the station on varroa
Cultural: Change the environment to make it less suitable for pest. Hygienic bees
Mechanical: Physical removal of the pest. Screened bottom board, drone comb removal, drone removal, hyperthermia, mite zapper
Biological: Using 1 living organism to control/combat another (They’ve tried several that work in the
lab but not in the hive. Cause more problems)
Chemical: Organic does not mean safe. Label is the law. You need to rotate your varroa chemical treatment. Oxalic Acid: need personal protection, works best in the winter. 4G/brood box is shown to be effective while the 1G/brood box is not. They are trying to get the EPA to change their recommendations. 3 treatment 1 week apart. Formic acid is temperature dependent Hopguard: hop beta acid, Thymol, Essential oils. Spring when it’s warming up: recommend Formic acid/Apivar. Spring: most things worked, Fall, not much worked at all. His biggest take away is to test your mite load, minimally before and after treatment to see that it worked. Sugar rolls or alcohol washes. UF: Two Bees in a Podcast
